Public Denouncement of Racism and Related Evil
My previous article (on animal rights) started with a quote by Elie Wiesel saying that we must "always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. " Synchronicity has it that the next day my dear friend Dorothy posted a challenge calling us all to publicly denounce racism, white supremacy, anti-Semitism, homophobia and the like. This made me understand that it is time to take another public stand.
Here are my thoughts:
Past Life Regressions have rapidly become my major line of work in the last few years, as a result of which I'm experiencing daily encounters with the workings of karma. When you observe multiple lives unfolding as part of conscious evolution, you realize that "the whole world is a stage," a strange stage indeed, in which every man and every woman can take up the most diverse of roles. Gangsters may become helpers, fools may become counselors, killers may become healers, friends can turn into strangers and enemies, while enemies can turn into friends and family. Sometimes circumstances which appear to be "good" are traps or swamps of laziness, other times "bad things" can turn out to be blessings in disguise. A bully might actually be our best teacher when we need to learn to stand up for ourselves, or an illness can point out an imbalance in our life we need to deal with. |
All of these gems of insight, however, can lead spiritually oriented people to the dangerous and false conclusion that "everything is meant to be," and every evil in this world serves the greater good. Abuse is often interpreted as nothing but a prearranged learning situation or kind of psycho-drama. Coupled with the social anthropological understanding that "right" and "wrong" in diverse human cultures have proven to be highly subjective, it makes it easy to just "walk by" when we see evil rising. It is easy to become neutral and allow for some of the greatest evils of our times to remain unchecked.
The doctrine of "relativity of good and evil" thus can quickly become a major vehicle to drive the world into darkness.
My work with past (and future) lives has also taught me that there is something bigger than the silent workings of karma. I was always puzzled by a curious phenomenon: Say, I have a rather advanced consciousness sitting in front of me: someone, who is doing great work of self-development, is kind, helps others, but when we go back into his or her most recent past lives we see a murderer, full of intrigues and ignorance.

How can a person evolve so quickly? The gap seems too big! What has possibly made such nearly miraculous transformation possible? In search for this "holy grail," I found that at certain point in their development, humans may get in touch with something they often label "the Light" or some sort of "Energy," even "God" or simply just "Love." Such experience might occur in a near-death scenario or while encountering a highly advanced being who is carrying that "energy." This magical encounter might last only a second, but it transforms the quality of one's consciousness for good. At this point, a kind of sacred urge is emerging to explore higher levels of existence.

And this is also the point when I'm telling you: there is such thing as "absolute evil." It is of such nature that it makes it impossible for an individual to follow their inner voice, and ultimately the path of the Light. It is not the bully who is challenging you to become stronger. It is not even the bully who leads you into the gas chamber. It is the proper Nazi who leads you into the gas chamber AND burns your manuscript hidden in your pocket, because it aims to stop your entire process of conscious evolution! That is absolute evil , and as such must be considered universally unethical and beyond dualistic considerations.
Absolute evil is still surrounding us. Right now, while I'm typing these words, gay men are being taken to concentration camps. Make no mistake about it, such thing is not simple murder: it is the prevention of a new awareness to rise, the stopping of the individuation process for those who are exploring love beyond biological procreation. Right now, while I'm typing this words, also Larung Gar, the great Buddhist monastic "city in the sky" is in the process of forced demolished. Make no mistake about it, this's not simply vandalism of heritage buildings: it is the prevention of Tibetan spirituality to send out its higher vibrations into the world and help people on their paths to enlightenment.
A dear friend of mine said these days: "Things have to get worse, before they can get better." With a lot of respect, especially to the underlying understanding that the world does need a wake-up call, I challenge this statement. The experiment "of things getting worse" already run in the 20th century: things did get a LOT worse, in fact they got so bad that in many ways we as human beings lost our raison d'être. The horror wasn't even that long ago: I'm relatively young, but being from Hungary, I still personally met at least four people who were in Auschwitz, two of them twins Mengele himself experimented on. We cannot let things to get worse again by allowing Neo-Nazism to run its course! That would be the repetition of the same mistake. We already know where that road is heading...
Instead, I believe things have to get a little better before they can get a lot better. It is time to be very clear. Racism and anti-Semitism, national frontier walls and guards, restrictions on personal freedoms such as intolerance towards homosexuals and freethinkers are horrors of the past which belong on shelves among dusty pages of history books, and it is our duty to keep them there.
Thus and in this spirit, I take up the challenge and... I publicly denounce racism and anti-Semitism, right-wing politics in whatever form it may arise, the Nazis and the Kux Klux Klan, homophobia and all other forms of bigotry and hatred. |
Simultaneously, I publicly invite all of us to try and understand the wrong-doer. As Dostoevsky said, it is easy to condemn the criminal, but so much harder to understand him. I'm inviting us all (myself included) to embark and forever continue on that journey of inner personal development, which I believe is the only path to genuine peace. I invite us all to sit down with that "inner Nazi," share with'em a cup of tea and tell them that it's all right ... to pursue the arts instead.
